THE MISSION OF THE FISHERMEN'S MUTUAL
Mútua dos Pescadores - Mútua de Seguros, CRL, is an insurance company that began operations in 1942, in the fisheries sector. With 16.000 shareholders, it became Portugal's largest association in the maritime sector. In 2004, the Mutual adopted the legal status of a cooperative (consumer cooperative), thus becoming the first and only cooperative insurance company in Portugal. It actively takes part in the federative structure of the social and cooperative sector. It is committed to the sustainable development of coastal communities.

A network of 15 offices in mainland Portugal, in the Azores and Madeira, some of which include a doctor's office providing treatment. Based in Lisbon with a public office, central services, including doctor's offices and providing treatment, along with a training facility.

1942: Created as a Mutual, as part of a government corporate fisheries organization.
1974: It becomes separate from the Government and became a mutual, run by its members (which were only fishermen, at the time).
2000: It begins working with other maritime sectors and receives the Fisheries Medal of Honour, awarded by the Ministry, in recognition of its social activity.
2004: Granted the status of a cooperative, it becomes the only Portuguese insurance consumers cooperative.
